Quality & Safety

Quality, safety and security are the backbone of our company culture, and they drive everything that we do.

Quality

Universal continuously strives to be the premier resource for complete supply chain logistics solutions and to supply services that meet and exceed our customer’s expectations. We accomplish this through quality management systems designed to drive continuous improvement in process performance and effective corrective and preventative actions.

Universal integrates sophisticated error-proofing methods into our quality management systems. Universal’s Quality Team carefully documents, measures and maps the best practices from proven processes at our other operations. Our highly skilled and extensively trained staff then integrates these “lessons learned” into new and existing operations. Scheduled and random internal audit programs and SOX compliance audits are performed frequently to ensure that all process outputs are within prescribed tolerances. Select Universal facilities are registered to ISO 9001, AS 9100 (aerospace) and TS 16949 (automotive) quality assurance programs.

Our quality objectives are:

  • Improved customer service and process performance; delivering on-time, error-free performance and timely, accurate customer communications
  • Cost containment, revenue growth and financial stability achieved from the development of long-term partnerships
  • Cost saving opportunities and new initiatives to ensure continued profitability
  • Safe and secure work environments that meet all Government/regulatory requirements
  • Continuous employee education, participation and rewards for initiative, effectiveness and teamwork

Safety

Safety, Security & Environment – Universal is committed to the safety of our employees, contractors and the motoring public. Our Executive Leadership Team is committed to our deep Safety driven “Culture”, visible through the daily actions of our Associates, all the way down to the newest Team Member. Whether it’s the most tenured Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver hauling a load, the newest Dock Worker operating a forklift, and everyone in between, the individual commitment to our branded Safety “Culture” is never compromised.

Whether a non-office employee, office employee, company driver, contractor driver, agent or a broker, all are put through a vigorous screening process to prove they meet our high standards for safety and security. Safety is a commitment we require from everyone and something that we maintain throughout the lifetime of our many partnerships. Ensuring all Associates meet our elevated safety and security standards up front provides the platform of our Safety “Culture”, and it’s the core of our business continuity plan.

Our security measures keep-up with our customers’ needs. Our carriers and those locations dealing with international shipments are C-TPAT approved and all personnel and drivers have ID badges once on-board. Nearly all of our trailers are equipped with state-of-the-art tracking devices that will send our operations department alerts if a unit has unauthorized movement. We provide 24 hour phone access to safe and secure parking for equipment and loads. All applicable drayage, government services and commercial motor vehicle operators have passed the Transportation Security Administration process and have received their TWIC (Transportation Worker Identifications Cards) when required.

Universal understands the need for greener operations. We are involved with several air resource board programs,,  as well as maintaining yearly participation in the EPA’s Smartway Program involving continuous trailer tire and side skirt compliance improvements. Our application process is nearly paperless, and with our installed ELD platform provided by Transflo, we are decreasing our carbon footprint. At Universal, we take Safety, Security, and our Country’s Environment very seriously!
